Rik Mayall is one of Britain's most creative and fabulous comedians and has been creating masterpieces for the large and small screen for over twenty years. He was born on 7 March 1958 in a village called Matching Tye, just outside Harlow in Essex. His parents, John and Gillian both were drama teachers. His acting debut was at the age of six, when he appeared in his father's production of The Good Woman of Setzuan. He studied drama at the University of Manchester where he met with his comedy partner and best friend Adrian Edmondson, both have superb comedy partnership. In the late 70s they formed a comedy group called Twentieth Century Coyote.Rik Mayall gained main stream recognition from the comedy store, a renowned club in the United States which focuses the alternate comedy. The Club provided a platform to many comedians including Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson, Ben Elton, and Keith Allen and helped them to initiate their careers. During his stay at Manchester he also met with Lise Mayer and Ben Elton with whom he later wrote the Young Ones. It was a tremendous series which left a great impact on the British sitcom. His career was launched, and at only twenty-four years of age he became one of the most popular comedians in Britain. For solo performances Mayall also developed few characters for instance a revolutionary poet named Rik and Kevin Turvey an investigative journalist. Rik’s popularity led to a regular slot for Kevin Turvey on A Kick Up the Eighties, first broadcast in 1981. He is best known for his roles in The Young Ones, Bottom, Believe Nothing, Drop Dead Fred and The New Statesman. While doing The Young Ones Rik wrote and also appeared in various films and television shows. One of the most famous is The New States Man, an award winning sitcom in which Rik represented Tory MP Alan B'Stard with a wicked sense of satire. When he starred as the title role in Drop Dead Fred he got recognition in the Hollywood industry. In 1991 he came to the British TV screens with "Bottom" a show which only ran for 3 seasons but was highly admired by the public, that he and his partner Adrian Edmondson still tour with live shows based on the series around Britain every two years.
